Association of widespread adoption of the 39-week rule with overall mortality due to stillbirth and infant death
JAMA Pediatrics Dec 16, 2019
Pilliod RA, et al. - In this retrospective historical cohort study using birth certificate and infant death certificate data in the United States to contrast years prior to and following the adoption of the 39-week rule, experts intended to ascertain whether widespread adoption of a 39-week rule, limiting elective deliveries former to 39 weeks’ gestation, was related to a rise or reduction in overall mortality when acknowledging both stillbirths and infant deaths. The study was done on a total of 7,322,234 births involved in the preadoption period and 6,972,626 births involved in the postadoption period. They found that irrespective of an increase in stillbirth, overall perinatal mortality rates were noted in the 2-year period promptly following the adoption of the 39-week rule.
