Association of weight loss interventions with changes in biomarkers of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis
JAMA Internal Medicine Sep 07, 2019
Koutoukidis DA, Astbury NM, Tudor KE, et al. - Researchers investigated how weight loss interventions influence biomarkers of liver disease in people with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). They performed this systematic review and meta-analysis of 22 randomized clinical trials including 2,588 participants with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Outcomes revealed statistically significant association of weight loss interventions with improvements in biomarkers, including alanine aminotransferase, histologically or radiologically measured liver steatosis, histologic NAFLD activity score, and presence of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. They identified no statistically significant change in histologic liver fibrosis. The evidence gained seemed supporting the necessity for changing the current clinical guidelines and recommendation of formal weight loss programs to treat people with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
