Association of use of the neonatal early-onset sepsis calculator with reduction in antibiotic therapy and safety: A systematic review and meta-analysis
JAMA Pediatrics Nov 16, 2019
Achten NB, Klingenberg C, Benitz WE, et al. - Researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine how management guided by the neonatal early-onset sepsis (EOS) calculator influence the empirical antibiotic therapy for newborns with suspected EOS. They performed electronic searches in MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, and Google Scholar and recognized 13 relevant studies analyzing a total of 175,752 newborns for inclusion. Findings suggest an achievement of a significant decrease in empirical antibiotic therapy in correlation to management guided by an EOS calculator vs conventional management, with a relative risk of 56% in before-after implementation studies. Safety data were limited, however, there was no evidence indicating the inferiority compared with conventional management strategies.
