Association of time of first corticosteroid treatment with bronchopulmonary dysplasia in preterm infants
Pediatric Pulmonology Aug 18, 2021
Cuna A, Lagatta JM, Savani RC, et al. - A higher probability of Grade 2 or 3 bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) development was associated with later initiation of treatment with systemic corticosteroids in preterm infants in routine clinical practice, vs earlier administration of systemic corticosteroids.
A multi-center retrospective cohort study.
Children's Hospitals Neonatal Database and Pediatric Health Information System database were used.
Participants were preterm infants <32 weeks' gestation who were given systemic corticosteroids after 7 days of age and before 34 weeks' postmenstrual age.
When birth features, admission characteristics, center, and co-morbidities were adjusted, higher independent odds of developing Grade 2 or 3 BPD were noted in infants first treated at 36-49 days and >50 days vs those treated at 8–21 days.
