Association of the use of diabetes technology with HbA1c and BMI-SDS in an international cohort of children and adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes: The SWEET project experience

Pediatric Diabetes Nov 04, 2021

Marigliano M, Eckert AJ, Guness PK, et al. - In a cohort of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D), switching from multiple daily injections (MDI) to insulin pump (CSII) was found to be significantly related to improvement in glycemic control but elevated BMI-SDS (body adiposity) over-time.

  • Using the SWEET prospective multicenter diabetes registry, a total of 4,643 T1D patients [2-18 years, T1D ≥1year, without celiac disease, no CSII and/or CGM (glucose sensor) before 2016] were analyzed, and data were obtained at two points (2016;2019).

  • From 2016 to 2019, a significant increase was evident in the proportion of patients using MDI with CGM and CSII with CGM (7.2% to 25.7%, 7.8% to 27.8% respectively).

  • Groups that switched from MDI to CSII with or without CGM had a significantly lower HbA1c but experienced a higher BMI-SDS.
