Association of systolic blood pressure with cardiovascular outcomes in elderly patients with hypertension in Northern China
Blood Pressure Monitoring Sep 12, 2018
Guo X, et al. - Among elderly hypertensive patients in northern China, researchers determined how systolic blood pressure (SBP) is associated with cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. They carried out a prospective cohort study including 9,655 elderly hypertensive patients from Kailuan study, focusing on the incidence of primary outcomes (composite outcomes including myocardial infarction, stroke, and all-cause death) and the incidence of secondary outcomes (stroke, myocardial infarction, and all-cause death). They observed a higher risk of developing adverse outcomes even with 140 ≤ SBP < 150 mmHg among elderly hypertensive patients with a high risk of 10-year ischemic cardiovascular disease. They also noted that SBP of less than 130 mmHg was not related significantly to an attenuated risk of developing adverse outcomes.
