Association of system-level factors with secondary overtriage in trauma patients
JAMA Jan 21, 2019
Parikh PP, et al. - Using 2008-2012 data from the Ohio Trauma and Emergency Medical Services registries, researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study to examine the impact of regionalization of trauma care, including the distribution of trauma centers, on secondary overtriage (SO). They also assessed clinical and demographic factors that may lead to SO. The data presented in this work showed a 12.2% rate of SO. Findings revealed that the distribution of major trauma centers in the region was significantly linked to SO. Therefore, subsequent investigations to determine the optimum number and distribution of trauma centers can be critical. Together with the use of telemedicine, specific outreach and collaboration of level III trauma centers and non-trauma centers with level I and II trauma centers may provide further guidance to level III trauma centers and non-trauma centers for the transfer of injured patients.
