Association of sugar sweetened beverages consumption with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis
European Journal of Nutrition May 18, 2018
Asgari-Taee F, et al. - Researchers explored the link between sugar sweetened beverages (SSB) consumption and NAFLD in this meta-analysis of observational studies. They used Der-Simonian and Laird method to calculate pooled odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals while random effects meta-analysis was used, considering conceptual heterogeneity. Using the Cochran Q statistic and I2 statistic, they assessed and quantified heterogeneity, respectively. Findings supported a positive significant association between higher consumption of SSB and NAFLD in both men and women. The evidence that intake of SSBs should be limited to reduce fatty liver disease was strengthened by the findings.
