Association of sudden in-hospital cardiac arrest with Emergency Department crowding
Resuscitation Mar 17, 2019
Chang YH, et al. - Via conducting this first-in-kind, retrospective, observational study, researchers investigated the link between emergency department (ED) crowding and sudden unexpected in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA). They analyzed patients with sudden IHCA in an ED from February 2016 to September 2017. Every 2 hours, they recorded ED crowding parameters, including ED bed occupancy rates (EDBORs), number of boarding patients, and patients with boarding time to general ward or intensive care unit of > 24 and > 48 hours. Findings revealed increased sudden IHCA incidence in correlation with EDBORs and prolonged boarding to general wards or intensive care units.
