Association of subtle alterations in thyroid function with presarcopenia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus
Journal of Diabetes Investigation Nov 01, 2021
Li P, Ding L, Zhen J, et al. - Presence of subclinical hyperthyroidism confers an independent risk for presarcopenia in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This is not true for subclinical hypothyroidism.
A cross-sectional study of 1,865 adult patients with T2DM.
T2DM patients with subclinical hyperthyroidism, but not those with subclinical hypothyroidism, exhibited an increased odds of presarcopenia (multivariate-adjusted odds ratio) = 1.99), vs the euthyroid group (Euthy).
Independent risk factors for presarcopenia in the subclinical hyperthyroidism group were age and BMI < 24kg/m 2 .
A high FT4/FT3 ratio was revealed as a good index of presarcopenia in addition to the elderly, in the Euthy group with T2DM.
