Association of strabismus with functional vision and eye-related quality of life in children
JAMA Ophthalmology Mar 31, 2020
Hatt SR, Leske DA, Castañeda YS, et al. - Utilizing the Pediatric Eye Questionnaire (PedEyeQ), researchers explored the correlation of strabismus with functional vision and eye-related quality of life in children and their families. This investigation was performed between December 2017 and October 2019. Participants in the study were 91 children with strabismus and 166 visually normal controls across 3 age groups (0-4, 5-11, and 12-17 years) who were recruited at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, and Retina Foundation of the Southwest, Dallas, Texas. The results obtained from this cross-sectional study indicate that strabismus is related to reduced functional vision and eye-related quality of life in children. In addition, parents of children with strabismus experience a lower quality of life. Such results advance awareness of how strabism impacts children and their families, and should be taken into account when establishing priorities for patient management.
