Association of strabismus with functional vision and eye-related quality of life in children
JAMA Ophthalmology May 18, 2020
Hatt SR, Leske DA, Castañeda YS, et al. - Using the Pediatric Eye Questionnaire (PedEyeQ), researchers conducted this cross-sectional study to explore the correlation of strabismus with functional vision and eye-related quality of life in children and their families. This investigation was carried out between December 2017 and October 2019. The sample consisted of 91 children with strabismus and 166 visually normal controls across 3 age groups (0-4, 5-11, and 12-17 years) who were registered at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, and Retina Foundation of the Southwest, Dallas, Texas. Findings suggested an association of strabismus with reduced functional vision and eye-related quality of life in children. Parents of children with strabismus often report a poorer quality of life. Such results help to understand how strabismus affects children and their families and should be considered when defining the objectives of patient management.
