Association of step volume and intensity with all-cause mortality in older women
JAMA Aug 09, 2019
Lee IM, et al. - Researchers examined how the number of steps taken per day and stepping intensity are associated with mortality rates among older women. They conducted a cohort study involving 16,741 women with a mean age of 72 years, and measured their steps per day over 7 days. During a follow-up of 4.3 years, they noted significantly lower mortality rates among women who averaged approximately 4,400 steps/day vs the least active women who took approximately 2,700 steps/day. A progressive decrease in mortality rates was observed as more steps per day were accrued, before leveling at approximately 7,500 steps/day.
