Association of statin use in older people primary prevention group with risk of cardiovascular events and mortality: A systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies
BMC Medicine Jun 26, 2021
Awad K, Mohammed M, Zaki MM, et al. - By analyzing observational studies in this systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers investigated the connection of statin use in older people primary prevention group with risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality. Relevant observational studies (cohort or nested case-control) were identified from PubMed, Scopus, and Embase. Overall, 10 eligible observational studies (9 cohorts and one case-control study; n = 815,667) were included. Among older people (aged ≥ 65 years) without CVD, a 14%, 20%, and 15% lower risk of all-cause mortality, CVD death, and stroke, respectively, was observed in relation to statin therapy. The advantageous link with the risk of all-cause mortality continued to be significant even at higher ages (> 75 years old), in both males and females, and in people with diabetes mellitus (DM), but not in those without DM. These data favor further trials to examine the benefits of statins in those above 75 years of age.
