Association of social mobility with the income-related longevity gap in the United States: A cross-sectional, county-level study
JAMA Jan 30, 2020
Venkataramani A, et al. - A cross-sectional, county-level study was conducted to measure if social mobility is associated with income-related differences in life expectancy in the United States. In this study, they collected data from 1,559 counties in the United States to evaluate the relationship of social mobility with average life expectancy at age 40 years by sex and income quartile among adult men and women between January, 2000 and December, 2014. They applied bayesian generalized linear multilevel regression models to evaluate the relationship, with adjustment for a range of socioeconomic, demographic, and healthcare system characteristics. An association was found between higher county-level social mobility and smaller county-level gaps in life expectancy by income. The data prompt further examination of causal associations between policies that shift social mobility and health outcomes.
