Association of sleep quality during pregnancy with stress and depression: A prospective birth cohort study in China
BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth Dec 06, 2019
Gao M, Hu J, Yang L, et al. - Researchers explored the association of sleep quality during the second-trimester with antenatal stress, antenatal depression, and postnatal depression. From a prospective cohort study in China, 1,152 pregnant women were assessed for sleep quality during pregnancy using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index [PSQI], for perinatal stress using Pregnancy Pressure Scale [PPS], and for depression status using Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale [EPDS]. The investigators noted a positive association of PSQI scores with antenatal PPS scores, antenatal EPDS scores, and postpartum EPDS scores. Their findings suggested an association of poor sleep quality in the second trimester with stress and depression symptoms in this patient population. Consideration should thus be given to strategies aimed at boosting sleep quality during prenatal healthcare to improve women’s mental health status.
