Association of sleep problems and melatonin use in school-aged children
JAMA Pediatrics Sep 12, 2019
Koopman-Verhoeff ME, et al. - Researchers conducted this investigation to study melatonin use in school-aged children and its correlation with subjective sleep and objectively measured sleep parameters. In 25% of children and adolescents, sleep problems were reported. Melatonin was accessible in many countries without a prescription and was frequently considered as a pharmacologic strategy to treat sleep problems. There are no clinical guidelines, however, and efficacy and long-term impacts of melatonin use are largely unknown in children. In healthy children, melatonin use had been estimated to be 1%. There is little information in this population about the connection of objectively measured sleep with the use of melatonin.
