Association of sleep problems and melatonin use in school-aged children
JAMA Jul 27, 2019
Koopman-Verhoeff ME, et al. - Experts examined melatonin use in school-aged children and its correlation with subjective sleep and objectively measured sleep parameters. In 25% of children and adolescents, sleep problems were reported. Melatonin was accessible in many countries without a prescription and was frequently acknowledged as a pharmacologic strategy to treat sleep problems. However, in children, no clinical guidelines were available, and the efficiency and long-term impacts of melatonin use were largely unknown. In healthy children, melatonin use had been estimated to be 1%. In this population, limited knowledge was available about the correlation of objectively measured sleep with melatonin use.
