Association of sinonasal factors with chronic laryngitis in Korean adults
JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Oct 22, 2019
Lee K, et al. - In this cross-sectional study involving 11,283 candidates [mean (SD) age was 50.1 (16.6) years], researchers estimated the relationship of the prevalence of chronic laryngitis with various sinonasal symptoms and endoscopic findings, and identified which of the sinonasal factors are particularly related to allergic cause of chronic laryngitis. Findings suggested an association of chronic laryngitis with a higher rate of rhinitis symptoms, anterior/posterior nasal drip, nasal congestion, endoscopic findings of pale mucosa, mucous or puslike discharge, and puslike discharge in the middle meatus, especially in female candidates and candidates older than 50 years. According to subgroup analysis, all candidates with allergic laryngitis exhibited sensitization to Dermatophagoides farinae, and the allergic laryngitis group had a higher presence of rhinitis symptoms than did the nonallergic laryngitis group among candidates younger than 50 years. The presence of symptoms of rhinitis in young adults may help to identify allergic laryngitis.
