Association of sexting with sexual behaviors and mental health among adolescents
JAMA Pediatrics Aug 09, 2019
Mori C, et al. - Researchers explored the relationships between sexting, sexual behavior (sexual activity, multiple sexual partners, lack of contraception use), and mental health via a meta-analysis of 23 studies with 41,723 candidates. They included sex, age, publication date, and methodological quality of the studies as moderators. Findings suggested a significant link between adolescent sexting and sexual activity, multiple sexual partners, lack of contraception use, delinquent behavior, internalizing problems, and substance use. Moderator analyses showed that in younger adolescents, associations between sexting, sexual behavior, and mental health variables were stronger vs older adolescents. In order to help young people navigate their personal, social and sexual development in a technological world, educational campaigns are required to increase awareness of digital health, safety and security.
