Association of serum uric acid levels with COVID-19 severity
BMC Endocrine Disorders May 13, 2021
Hu F, Guo Y, Lin J, et al. - Researchers undertook this case–control analysis to determine if coronavirus disease (COVID-19) patients had serum uric acid (SUA) lower than normal. They also inquired if and how SUA levels were associated with COVID-19 severity. This study involved 91 cases with COVID-19 and 273 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. Lower SUA and uric acid/creatinine values than normal were detected at admission in patients with COVID-19. A significantly higher crude risk of developing severe symptoms was observed in male COVID-19 patients with low SUA levels vs those with high SUA levels. During disease aggravation, a gradual decline in SUA concentration was seen until discharge. SUA level was identified to be similar to the levels at admission, at the follow-up exam.
