Association of selected adipokines with metabolic syndrome and cardio-metabolic risk factors in young males

Ouerghi N, Fradj MKB, Talbi E, et al. - In this study with young males, researchers determined how circulating leptin, adiponectin, chemerin, and omentin-1 were related to metabolic syndrome (MetS) and cardio-metabolic risk factors. Of 38 participants, 11 met criteria of MetS. Higher leptin and chemerin and lower adiponectin plasma levels were detected in these people vs those without MetS. In multivariate models, age, abdominal obesity, increased blood pressure, increased triglycerides and C-reactive protein (CRP) were found as predictors of leptin. Chemerin was shown to be related to abdominal obesity and CRP, and adiponectin was identified to be related to increased triglycerides, reduced HDL-C and CRP. Omentin was only predicted by HOMA-IR (homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance). Overall, findings revealed the presence of an altered plasma adipokines profile, with raised leptin and chemerin and reduced adiponectin circulating levels, in correlation with MetS. A beneficial potential of adiponectin and omentin, but a detrimental potential of leptin and chemerin, was indicated by these results.
