Association of seasonal severity and vaccine effectiveness with influenza vaccination rates in children

JAMA Pediatrics Jan 11, 2020

Abraham C, et al. - Researchers used publicly available data to explore the correlations of seasonal influenza severity and current and former year’s vaccine effectiveness (VE) with yearly vaccination rates within age groups. Among children, influenza vaccination rates continue to be lower vs other pediatric and adolescent vaccines. Whether a child is vaccinated against influenza can be affected by many variables. Nonetheless, to what extent, if any, the severity of an influenza season and either prevailing or former year’s VE could impact vaccination rates have still to be investigated, to the knowledge. This information may be useful in understanding how parents are to be informed about message severity and VE data.
