Association of screen time and depression in adolescence
JAMA Pediatrics Sep 12, 2019
Boers E, et al. - Using data from a randomized clinical trial, researchers performed a secondary analysis to repeatedly calculate the link between screen time and depression to test three explanatory hypotheses: displacement, upward social comparison, and reinforcing spirals. Using an annual survey in a sample of adolescents who entered the seventh grade in 31 schools in the Greater Montreal area, screen time and depression were evaluated throughout 4 years. According to results, significant between-person relationships revealed that for every increased hour spent using social media, adolescents displayed a 0.64-unit rise in depressive symptoms. When developing preventive measures and advising parents, both screen time modes should be considered, noted the researchers.
