Association of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass with postoperative healthcare use and expenditures in Canada
JAMA Surgery Sep 21, 2020
Tarride JE, Doumouras AG, Hong D, et al. - Researchers conducted a population-based cohort study of 1,587 patients who underwent a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and 1,587 control individuals in Ontario, Canada, in order to determine if Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure is linked with higher health care spending 5 years after the procedure. The net health care expenditures linked with the procedure were CAD $10 831 (2017 Canadian dollars) (US $8341) over 5 years, excluding the costs linked with the date of the procedure. They identified statistically significantly higher health care expenditures during the 3 years after the procedure but, thereafter, the expenditures were similar to spending in the control group. These findings are suggestive of association of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass with increased health care costs in the short term in a setting with a public health care system.
