Association of risk of suicide attempts with methylphenidate treatment
JAMA Psychiatry Nov 06, 2017
Man KKC, et al. - The link between methylphenidate and the risk of suicide attempts was exploratively analyzed in this research. Higher incidence of suicide attempts was reported in the period immediately before the start of methylphenidate treatment. Persistent elevation of the risk was disclosed, immediately after the start of methylphenidate treatment and returned to baseline levels during the continuation of methylphenidate therapy. This higher risk of suicide attempts before treatment could indicate emerging psychiatric symptoms that triggered medical consultations, aiding in a decision to begin attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) treatment. Hence, a causal connection between methylphenidate treatment and suicide attempts was not supported in this trial.
