Association of rideshare use with alcohol-associated motor vehicle crash trauma
JAMA Jun 14, 2021
Conner CR, Ray HM, McCormack RM, et al. - Researchers sought to determine if rideshare services have affected motor vehicle trauma rates and convictions for impaired driving in Houston, Texas. In this multicenter cohort study, they retrieved hospital data at both major trauma centers in Houston, Texas; convictions for impaired driving from the Harris County, Texas, District Attorney’s office; and data on rideshare use from Uber and Google for Houston. Analysis revealed a significant negative correlation of rideshare volume with the incidence of motor vehicle–associated trauma; this was noted to be most evident in those younger than 30 years; a significant reduction in convictions for impaired driving was linked with the introduction of rideshare services. Findings overall suggest that utilizing rideshares to avoid impaired driving, young people may aid in reducing motor vehicle trauma.
