Association of retinal nerve fiber layer thinning with current and future cognitive decline: A study using optical coherence tomography
JAMA Oct 16, 2018
Ko F, et al. - In this community-based cohort study of more than 500,000 UK residents aged 40 to 69 years, researchers investigated if retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness could identify those at greater risk of cognitive decline. Findings revealed RNFL thickness was significantly associated with cognitive function at baseline. Furthermore, patients with a thinner RNFL were noted to be at double the risk of experiencing cognitive decline over 3 years. Hence findings suggest a role of RNFL in screening those at risk of future cognitive decline.
