Association of renal arteriosclerosis and hypertension with renal and cardiovascular outcomes in Japanese type 2 diabetic patients with diabetic nephropathy
Journal of Diabetes Investigation Jan 05, 2019
Shimizu M, et al. - In Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes and biopsy-confirmed diabetic nephropathy, researchers studied the impact of renal arteriosclerosis (AS) and hypertension (HT) on long-term renal and cardiovascular outcomes. In this retrospective study, researchers enrolled 185 study participants who were divided into four groups and stratified by renal AS status and HT presence. Findings revealed that the proportion of renal AS score ≥ 1 was 88.3% among normal-range blood pressure (BP) and 95.4% among HT. One hundred twenty-nine episodes of renal composite events and 55 of cardiovascular events were noted during a mean follow-up period of 7.6 years. In both normal-range BP and HT, renal AS was correlated with increased risks for renal composite events and cardiovascular events. The risks of renal composite and cardiovascular events in renal AS and HT were the highest.
