Association of relative age in the school year with diagnosis of intellectual disability, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and depression

JAMA Pediatrics Nov 16, 2019

Root A, Brown JP, Forbes HJ, et al. - Researchers examined how relative age in the school year is associated with the incidence of intellectual disability, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and depression. They conducted a cohort study of 1,042,106 children (aged 4 to 15 years) in the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink. The analysis revealed a 1.3 times higher likelihood to be diagnosed with intellectual disability, 1.4 times higher likelihood to be diagnosed with ADHD, and 1.3 times higher likelihood to be diagnosed with depression among relatively young children vs the oldest quarter of children in the school year. These findings emphasize the necessity for effective interventions to reduce the negative intellectual ability and mental and physical health consequences of relative youth.
