Association of racial discrimination with neural response to threat in Black women in the US exposed to trauma

JAMA Jul 31, 2021

Fani N, Carter SE, Harnett NG, et al. - Studies have described a clear impact of racial discrimination on health-related outcomes. Researchers sought to determine how discriminatory experiences affect neural response patterns to emotionally salient cues, which likely mediates these outcomes. They conducted a cross-sectional study among 55 trauma-exposed US Black women and identified proportionally greater response in brain regions linked with threat vigilance and regulation of threat response among those with more racial discrimination experiences. Increased activation in brain regions linked with threat vigilance and regulation of threat response may disproportionately encumber and drain these resources over time, and hence, which in turn, may increase vulnerability for race-related health disparities.
