Association of PTSD and incident ischemic heart disease in women veterans
JAMA Cardiology Jun 17, 2021
Ebrahimi R, Lynch KE, Beckham JC, et al. - Researchers investigated if posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was related to incident ischemic heart disease (IHD) among women veterans, in this retrospective, longitudinal cohort study. They used national Veterans Health Administration electronic medical records. This study involved 398,769 women veterans, 132,923 with PTSD and 265,846 never diagnosed with PTSD. Baseline mean (SD) age was 40.1 (12.2) years. A median follow-up of 4.9 (interquartile range, 2.1-9.2) years was performed, which revealed development of incident IHD in 4381 women with PTSD (3.3%) and in 5559 control individuals (2.1%). This cohort study revealed that PTSD was related to elevated risk of IHD among female veterans and may carry implications for IHD risk evaluation in vulnerable people.
