Association of psychiatric comorbidity with the risk of premature death among children and adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder
JAMA Psychiatry Nov 15, 2019
Sun S, Kuja-Halkola R, Faraone SV, et al. - Researchers examined data from over 86,000 individuals with ADHD to determine the all-cause and cause-specific mortality risks in ADHD. In addition, they explored the potential role of psychiatric comorbidities. In all, they found that there is a correlation between ADHD and an elevated risk of premature death, and an important role of psychiatric comorbidity in the all-cause and cause-specific associations in adults. They observed an association of early onset psychiatric comorbidity with the risk of natural deaths compared with later-onset psychiatric comorbidity, which was mainly correlated with death due to unnatural causes, including suicide and unintentional injury. Close monitoring of individuals with ADHD for specific psychiatric comorbidities was thus recommended for early recognition of high-risk groups, and implementation of prevention efforts.
