Association of prevalence of benign pathologic findings after partial nephrectomy with preoperative imaging patterns in the United States from 2007 to 2014
JAMA Mar 27, 2019
Kim JH, et al. - In this cohort study involving 18,060 patients between 2007 and 2014, researchers examined the annual trend of prevalence of benign pathologic findings after partial nephrectomy (PNx) and determined the factors that can be associated with this prevalence. Findings revealed that the overall prevalence of benign pathologic findings was 30.9% and the annual trends showed a prevalence of over 30% for almost every year of the study period. Female sex, old age, and performance of computed tomographic imaging only as preoperative imaging modality were identified to influence the prevalence. Overall, the investigators found that the prevalence of benign pathologic findings after partial nephrectomy was high. It is recommended that clinicians focus more on potential risk factors, particularly radiological modalities to avoid unnecessary renal mass surgery.
