Association of preterm birth with risk of ischemic heart disease in adulthood
JAMA Pediatrics Aug 08, 2019
Crump C, Howell EA, Stroustrup A, et al. - Researchers evaluated the association between an increased risk of ischemic heart disease (IHD) in adulthood to preterm birth (gestational age < 37 weeks) through a large population-based cohort study of 2.1 million people. Gestational age at birth was inversely linked to IHD risk in adulthood. Preterm and early-term birth (37-38 weeks) were linked to an increased IHD risk in adulthood in this large national cohort. Persons born prematurely require early assessment and preventive actions to decrease the risk of IHD. The shared genetic or environmental variables in households did not seem to explain these connections.
