Association of preterm birth with lipid disorders in early adulthood: A Swedish cohort study
PLoS Medicine Nov 12, 2019
Crump C, et al. - Researchers performed the first large population-based study investigating the risk of lipid disorders in correlation to preterm birth. In this retrospective national cohort study, more than 2.2 million individuals born as singletons in Sweden from 1973 to 1995 (48.6% women) were followed up for lipid disorders via nationwide inpatient, outpatient, and pharmacy data through 2016 (maximum age 44 years). Lipid disorders were identified in 1.1% of persons in 30.3 million person-years of follow-up. The researchers findings support the association of preterm birth with increased risk of lipid disorders in early to mid-adulthood. They observed a 14% reduction in the risk of lipid disorders in correlation with each additional 5 weeks of gestation. Early preventive evaluation and long-term monitoring for lipid disorders may be required in persons born prematurely to reduce their future cardiovascular risks.
