Association of preoperative anemia with 30-day morbidity and mortality among patients with thyroid cancer who undergo thyroidectomy

Burton BN, et al. - In this retrospective, cross-sectional, cohort study, researchers analyzed 24,912 candidates to examine the association between preoperative anemia and outcomes following thyroid surgery in subjects with thyroid cancer. They observed 12.5%, the prevalence of preoperative anemia. Hypertension followed by active smoking were the most prevalent comorbidities noticed in the overall study population. They recorded higher adjusted odds of postoperative overall morbidity, mortality, and pulmonary and infectious complications in subjects with preoperative anemia as compared to those without preoperative anemia.
