Association of pregnancy and mortality in women diagnosed with breast cancer: A Nationwide Population Based Study in Taiwan
International Journal of Cancer Nov 02, 2018
Chuang SC, et al. - Researchers investigated the association of breast cancer diagnosis (during pregnancy and up to 5 years postpartum) with total mortality. They identified patients with breast cancer from the Taiwan Cancer Registry (2002–2014) and abstracted all pregnancies up to 5 years before breast cancer diagnosis from the National Health Insurance database. They then linked the data to the Taiwan National Death Certificate Database. Among the 30,230 patients with breast cancer identified, 90 received a diagnosis during pregnancy, 347 within a year postpartum, and 1,993 during 1–5 years postpartum. Subgroup analyses demonstrated an increased risk of mortality for patients who received a diagnosis within a year postpartum in ER+ cancers. Overall, results indicated that a recent pregnancy may be associated with higher mortality among ER+ patients.
