Association of postoperative organ space infection after intraoperative irrigation in appendicitis
The Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Mar 29, 2018
Hernandez MC, et al. - Researchers tested their hypothesis that for increasing appendicitis severity, patients receiving (high, ≥2 L) intraoperative irrigation would have increased postoperative organ space infection (OSI) rate compared to (low, <2 L) irrigation. They noted a wide variation in the use of irrigation for increasingly severe appendicitis. Postoperative OSI was observed in association with irrigation volumes of 2 L or greater. Morbidity associated with this high-volume disease could be prevented by improving standardization of irrigation volume (<2 L).
