Association of positive airway pressure prescription with mortality in patients with obesity and severe obstructive sleep apnea: The Sleep Heart Health Study
JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Jun 27, 2019
Lisan Q, et al. - In this multicenter, population-based cohort study of 392 patients with obesity and severe obstructive sleep apnea with 11 years of follow-up, researchers explored the connection between positive airway pressure (PAP) prescription and mortality. Investigators discovered that prescription of PAP therapy was linked to a 62% lower risk of all-cause mortality vs nonprescription of PAP, independent of major confounders. They concluded that PAP prescription was related to decreased all-cause mortality, and this connection seems several years after PAP initiation. These results can have powerful clinical consequences if replicated.
