Association of platelet count with all-cause mortality and risk of cardiovascular and respiratory morbidity in stable COPD
Respiratory Research May 11, 2019
Fawzy A, et al. – Via conducting this post hoc secondary analysis, researchers examined a subsample of nearly 1,800 patients from the Study to Understand Mortality and Morbidity in COPD (SUMMIT) to determine the link between platelet count and mortality in stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Participants had blood samples drawn at baseline. The study population consisted of current and former smokers aged 40–80 years with moderate COPD and a history or increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Overall, a U-shaped association of platelet count with increased risk of 3-year all-cause mortality was evident in stable COPD.
