Association of physical activity with adiposity in preschoolers using different clinical adiposity measures: A cross-sectional study
BMC Pediatrics Nov 09, 2019
Arhab A, Messerli-Bürgy N, Kakebeeke TH, et al. - In a large sample of preschoolers, researchers intended to determine if there is an association between objectively measured physical activity (PA) and different clinical adiposity measures. The Swiss Preschoolers’ Health Study (SPLASHY) included 463 predominantly normal-weight (77%) 2–6-year-old preschool children. Physical activity was measured with accelerometers and analyzed with validated cut-offs using 15-s (uni-axial) epoch length. BMI, the sum of four skinfolds, and waist circumference (WC) were included in the adiposity measures. PA is positively associated with BMI and WC in this very young and predominantly normal-weight population, but this link is not observed in overweight and obese children. According to this cross-sectional study, PA is inversely and SB is positively associated with skinfold thickness in this latter population. Skinfold thickness might be a useful and simple clinical measure of preschool body fat. In future studies, the role of vigorous PA in the prevention of obesity in early childhood should be further investigated.
