Association of persistent intense thirst with delirium among critically ill patients: A cross-sectional study
Journal of Pain and Symptom Management Apr 03, 2019
Sato K, et al. - In this retrospective cross-sectional study, researchers examined if thirst is related to delirium. They analyzed 401 patients in the intensive care unit for thirst intensity, which was measured on a scale of 0–10 (with 10 being the worst); a score ≥ 8 defined intense thirst. Persistence of intense thirst for > 24 hours was defined as persistent intense thirst. Using the Intensive Care Delirium Screening Checklist, they screened delirium. Intense thirst persisting for > 24 hours was associated with increased risk for delirium. Intense thirst sensation for > 24 hours was reported by 16.5% of patients. Findings indicated a higher risk for delirium among these patients vs those without persistent intense thirst.
