Association of persistent breech presentation with external cephalic version success

Obstetrics and Gynecology Jan 28, 2021

Lauterbach R, Bachar G, Ben-David C, et al. - Researchers aimed at evaluating a possible link between a new variable—persistent breech presentation—and the success rate of external cephalic version (ECV) via performing a retrospective study of ECVs performed in an Israeli tertiary care hospital. Among 1,271 women with breech presentation, an attempt for an external cephalic version was made in 684 women (53.8%), with a success rate of 61.5%. Ultimately, a lower rate of vaginal delivery, and a higher rate of instrumental and cesarean deliveries were observed among women with persistent breech presentation and successful ECV compared with the nonpersistent breech presentation group. Among women with persistent breech presentation, the rate of noninstrumental vaginal delivery was 5.4%, regardless of ECV. Overall, a high rate of ECV failure and a low rate of spontaneous vaginal delivery were observed among women with persistent breech presentation.
