Association of perioperative red blood cell transfusions with venous thromboembolism in a North American Registry
JAMA Oct 10, 2018
Goel R, et al. - Using prospectively collected registry data from the American College of Surgery National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS-NSQIP) database, the relationship between perioperative red blood cell (RBC) transfusions (preoperative and intraoperative or postoperative) and postoperative venous thromboembolism (VTE) {deep venous thrombosis [DVT] and pulmonary embolism [PE]} within 30 days of surgery was investigated. Study participants were patients in the ACS-NSQIP registry who had a surgical procedure from January 1 through December 31, 2014. The findings suggested that perioperative RBC transfusions might be significantly related to the development of new or progressive postoperative VTE, independent of several putative confounders. These discoveries should strengthen the significance of rigorous perioperative management of blood transfusion practices.
