Association of pediatric obesity treatment, including a dietary component, with change in depression and anxiety: A systematic review and meta-analysis

JAMA Sep 24, 2019

Jebeile H, et al. - Researchers determined the link between obesity treatment interventions, with a dietary component, and the change in symptoms of depression and anxiety in overweight/obese children and adolescents. They conducted a meta-analysis of 44 studies with a combined sample of 3,702 participants (age range: 5.6 to 16.6 years) and intervention duration of 2 weeks to 15 months. Outcomes revealed a reduction in symptoms of depression and anxiety at postintervention and follow-up. A larger reduction in anxiety was observed with interventions of longer duration, and a larger reduction in symptoms of depression was observed in studies including participants with a higher baseline BMI z score. No increased risk of depression or anxiety was observed in correlation with pediatric obesity treatment over a 16-month follow-up.
