Association of patient comorbid conditions with cancer clinical trial participation
JAMA Jan 15, 2019
Unger JM, et al. - Researchers investigated how comorbidities in patients with cancer are associated with the decision-making process for participation in cancer clinical trials by performing a national survey embedded within a web-based cancer treatment-decision tool accessible on multiple cancer-oriented websites. In this survey, 5,499 patients participated, with 3,420 (62.6%) women and 2,079 (37.8%) men (mean age, 56.63 [10.05] years). Significantly reduced trial discussions, trial offers, and trial participation itself was associated with an increase in comorbidities, independent of sociodemographic variables. Modernizing comorbidity-related eligibility criteria may provide an opportunity for several thousand more patients with well-managed comorbidities to participate in clinical trials each year.
