Association of parent-reported sleep problems in early childhood with psychotic and borderline personality disorder symptoms in adolescence

JAMA Jul 05, 2020

Morales-Muñoz I, et al. - Researchers investigated the associations of early childhood sleep problems with psychosis and borderline personality disorder at 11 to 13 years of age. In addition, they examined the potential mediation of the associations by depression at 10 years of age. From the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children birth cohort, data from 7,155 participants were assessed in this cohort study; follow up data were available for more than 13 years. Findings revealed association of frequent night awakenings at 18 months and irregular sleep routines at 6 and 30 months and 5.8 years of age with psychotic experiences, whereas there was association of shorter nighttime sleep duration and later bedtime at 3.5 years of age with borderline personality disorder symptoms. Only the associations between frequent night awakenings at 18 months of age and irregular sleep routines at 5.8 years of age with psychosis seemed to have mediating role depression at 10 years of age. Hence, there are different associations of specific early childhood sleep problems with later psychopathologic symptoms.
