Association of pallidal neurostimulation and outcome predictors with X-linked dystonia parkinsonism
JAMA Neurology Dec 06, 2018
Brüggemann N, et al. - In a cohort of patients with X-linked dystonia parkinsonism (XDP), researchers determined the effectiveness of internal globus pallidus (GPi)-deep brain stimulation (DBS) in a prospective study and identified predictors of postoperative results. In February 2013, this observational prospective cohort study registered patients and was completed in December 2014. A positive association was found between GPi-DBS and predominant dystonia (the primary endpoint) in XDP and contributed to improved quality of life (the secondary endpoint). The response to DBS took place within 1 week. GPi-DBS should be considered early during the course of the disease, given the inverse correlation of postoperative benefit and caudate atrophy. Close international collaboration, training, and multiple source funding enabled the sustainable follow-up of XDP patients in the Philippines.
