Association of overweight and obesity development between pregnancies with stillbirth and infant mortality in a cohort of multiparous women
Obstetrics and Gynecology Feb 27, 2020
Yu YH, et al. - In the present study, the researchers identified the relationship of newly developed prepregnancy overweight and obesity with stillbirth (intrauterine death at 20 weeks of gestation or greater) and infant mortality (less than 365 days after birth). A cohort of 212,889 women were involved in infant mortality analysis (192,941 women for stillbirth analysis). The crude rate of stillbirth and infant mortality were 3.3 per 1,000 pregnancies and 2.9 per 1,000 live births, respectively, in these final analytic cohorts. Those becoming overweight had 1.4 excess stillbirths per 1,000 pregnancies vs women who stayed at a normal weight in their second pregnancies. Findings suggested an association of transitioning from normal weight to overweight or obese between pregnancies with an increased risk of stillbirth and neonatal mortality.
